 Creating a photographic archive

Formulating the idea
The idea to make a visual record came about in 2005 when the Newgate Action Group discovered that Newgate Lane Primary School would be celebrating its 100th Anniversary on the 12th November 2005.
Although the school had made plans throughout the year to celebrate the event, there were no specific plans to have an event photographer.

So in stepped NAG. After a few discussions with the head teacher, Mrs Chris French, NAG decided to approach the town's local photographic club to see if we could find ourselves a suitable photographer. A quick e-mail to the James Maude Camera Club and we soon had a reply from a Gerald Peachey of Red Zebra Photography, a Mansfield based specialist in event photography.

After some initial discussions, we received a quotation of £249 and decided to apply to the Mansfield South Area Assembly for funding for both the photographer and the cost of a 4-page colour supplement to add to our next forthcoming newsletter. Unfortunately, the Assemblies funding group failed to meet prior to the event and so NAG decided to fund the project out of funds raised through advertisers in our community newsletter.

The event was a huge success with many pupils from past and present in attendance. After the photographs were processed, a full set of printed images together with copies of the images on CD were presented top the school. The school later had the printed photographs placed in special archive photo albums and this service was again provided by Red Zebra Photography.

Online Album
As an added bonus, most of the images were converted into a flash photo gallery and placed on the NAG website. The gallery can be found here. The only images not included in the flash gallery were the ones of children who attended the event as the school did not have parental permission to display images of pupils on the internet.
