Previous Minutes
3.1. Minutes of the meeting of 18th
October 2001 were agreed to be a true record.
4.
Reports & Updates
4.1. At the last meeting, it was
reported that the footpath leading from Mill Street to Rock Hill was cluttered
with litter and leaves and required cleaning This has not yet been done.
4.2. Following a request by the
group, it is reported that the grit bin at the top of Bolsover Street has been
re-filled in preparation for winter.
4.3. The trees at the junction of
Redcliffe Road and Ratcliffe Gate are scheduled for pruning. In addition, it
was also stated that although additional lighting could not be provided, the
relevant department would review the existing lighting to see if could be
adjusted to provide a better spread of light in that area.
4.4. Guest Presentations
4.4.1.
Jo Comerie – Mansfield Diamond Partnership – Jo
Comerie gave a short presentation to the group to inform them of the SRB4
(Single Regeneration Budget. SRB4 is basically a pot of money provided by the
government to assist local projects such as LETS Local Exchange Trading Scheme)
, EnProve IT (refurbished computers), etc. The Mansfield Diamond Partnership is a multi agency
group, which supports the development of SRB4 projects particularly in relation
to social, economic, environmental and physical health.
Titchfield Ward in Mansfield has a population of approximately 5,400 and
is recognised as a high-deprived economic area with significant pockets of
poverty. The 7 year bid aims to address multiple deprivation leading to social
exclusion through community development, including the raising of expectations
and aspirations of local people, education, improving skills through training,
energy efficiency and housing improvements and crime including youth crime
initiatives. Also adds value to health related activity, including drugs and
includes new childcare provision.
The scheme currently has around 4½ years to run. Some of the SRB4 is currently
being used in partnership with other organisations such as Mansfield 2010 on
the shop improvement works on Newgate Lane and has also provided a contribution
to the Jackson’s Field regeneration scheme.
Mansfield Diamond Partnership asked the group to come forward with any suggestions
they may have of projects, which may benefit the community. These could be as
divers as a crèche, free or heavily subsidised computer and internet courses,
anti-burglary and anti-car crime schemes, etc.
This is where your help is needed. If
you have any suggestions you wish to put forward, please feel free to pass them
on to the group (Contact numbers can be found on page 1).
4.4.2.
Paul Webster – EnProve IT – Paul Webster kindly came
along to discuss the EnProve IT scheme which helps provide refurbished computers
for local groups such as NAG. EnProve IT acquire what are considered to be
out-of-date computers from major organisations, which are then refurbished by
persons who have been long term unemployed. These computers would normally be
scrapped, but this is leading to a major environmental problem. EnProve IT are
helping to alleviate this problem and at the same time putting something back
into the community.
The computers they supply, far from being out of date, are an excellent choice
for persons new to computers and are more than capable for general usage. They
can also provide computers for surfing the Internet at extremely attractive
prices.
Details of
the scheme, together with Paul Webster’s contact number, can be found on page
3.
4.4.3.
Paul Chad – Senior Traffic Warden – Paul Chad gave a
presentation about the various duties of Mansfield’s traffic wardens and their
powers. Paul told the group that his job has become increasingly more difficult
with the 50% reduction in traffic wardens over the Nottinghamshire area. That
leaves just 35 traffic wardens for the whole county.
He reported that vehicles without tax, and fraudulent use of road tax, was rife in the area with Gladstone Street
and Hardwick Street being particular ‘hotspots’. Vehicles which are found to be
without tax after being warned are eventually towed away, however with only one
recovery vehicle for Notts/Leics and Derbyshire combined, the removal rate is
not as good as the department would like.
Even so in the year 1999-2000, both Notts and Derbyshire combined recovered
over £1.6 million in back duty.
Councillor Malcolm Sage raised the issue of the careless parking on the corner
of Broxtowe Drive and Ratcliffe Gate. Paul referred to this as a ‘sensitive’
issue as he would very much like to tackle the problem but is hampered by a
number of Police officers who themselves park on the hatch markings against the
corner whilst visiting the sandwich shop. Until senior Police management
addresses this problem, he felt it would be improper to target road users at
this time.
5.
Any Other Business
5.1. Local residents on Newgate Lane raised the issue of the poor
drains along that stretch of road, particularly from 122-136 Newgate Lane. This
has been leading to severe flooding with several residents complaining of
flooding in cellars. The group will try to raise the issue with the Council and
Severn Trent to try and resolve this matter.
The meeting closed at 8.30pm
Date
and time of next meeting - 6.30pm on Tuesday
15th January 2002 at 110 Newgate Lane.
