4. Reports and updates

   i. Traffic issues

The same issues as at the last meeting were reported – Carter Lane parking, Newgate Lane bollards, Mill Street parking, dumped cars. Chris Winterton was working on them. It was agreed Barbara should invite the police and if possible the traffic warden manager to the next meeting.

  ii. 141 Newgate Lane

As agreed, Barbara had looked at 110 Newgate Lane and reported that she thought it could be suitable for meetings, surgeries, etc.. An agreement could be entered into that would be clear and relatively secure without the need for a lease or help with funding. Meanwhile MDC Legal department were pursuing the outstanding issues at 141 and the situation there should be regularised soon. It was agreed that the option of 110 should be pursued. Anthony offered to produce NAG posters for the window.

iii. Quality Street

It had been reported that there was now progress on the “pocket park”: the work should be complete by about the end of August.

iv. Jackson’s field

Barbara and Anthony reported on the situation with regard to the mast. One-to-one had discovered there were some debts out-standing from Ionica. One-to-one had therefore decided to pull out  and not to build the mast. Whether their decision was partly the result of NAG’s campaigning as well as MDC representations on NAG’s behalf was not clear. But the campaign had certainly been worthwhile and successful!

On the plans for the park, there were objections as per the last meeting, plus some new concerns: a) use of Mill Street and Beresford Street as thoroughfares, b) fencing of the area during the work as well as afterwards. Anthony explained that the consultation process had been very thorough, that the balance between access and gating was difficult to judge and might need adjustment. Cathy Gillespie from Groundwork (on behalf of Ian Rose who had another meeting) described Groundwork’s involvement and explained the plans in outline, inviting people to come and look at the large plan after the meeting. It was agreed that the police should be invited to the next meeting to address issues such as the use of Mill Street, and that the question of fencing should be put to the contractors. Otherwise the plans were welcomed. It was agreed that everyone present should receive an A4 version of the plan with the minutes. Anthony agreed to liaise with Leisure over any children’s play area improvements.

5. Any other business

a) David Clay asked for a progress report at the next meeting on the housing renewal programme: how many houses have been improved, how much money has been spent, when will Rock Street, Mill Street and the top end of Beresford Street be reached, what percentage of the costs do residents have to pay.

BN to arrange

b) Improved lighting was still needed for the garage area on Mill Street and Barbara was trying to pursue this.

c) Rubbish, especially cardboard was reported to be being dumped behind the Co-op on Carter Lane. Barbara would report this.

6. Date and time of next meeting:

6.30 pm Tuesday 11th September at Newgate Lane School.

The meeting closed at 7.50 pm, but many people stayed to look at the Jackson’s field plans.
